Jennifer set for a musical journey of discovery with the PPO

Fareham soprano Jennifer Parker-Lummis has been warming up for her next concert, which will be with the Portsmouth Philharmonic Orchestra in Stubbington on Saturday.

She will be singing a range of songs, including by Puccini and Offenbach, as well as music from the films, featuring among others Titanic, in a concert promoted by Monserrat Events entitled a ‘A Journey Beyond Imagination’.

The concert is on Saturday June 27 (7pm) at the Stubbington Community Centre.

As well as Parker-Lummis’s songs, there will be music by Rimsky-Korsakov and Dvorak and also a premiere of a piece called ‘Voyager’ by Nathan R. Whitney, who is from Barbados and studies at the University of Portsmouth. Tickets, priced £15 for adults are on sale here.

Jennifer is really looking forward to the occasion: “Singing with an orchestra is like singing with a living creature. We have to work together to make sure we come in at the right point,” she explained.

“The orchestra have to follow me, so it’s a very different technique to singing with a backing track, which is fixed. It’s amazing. When I’m not singing the orchestra take over and there are instruments which take over solo parts so it’s like a group effort to all bring this story together.

“It is beautiful. When I’m having a rest and we hear the violin or flute come in it’s incredible for me. It’s another level from a backing track,” she added. This is the fourth time the orchestra has collaborated with Parker-Lummis.

Founded in 2009 and supported by Bishops Printers, the PPO fundraises for local charities, and this concert will be in aid of Motiv8, which works with young people in the area.

PPO I TV has caught up with Jennifer, when she took time out from rehearsals. The interview tells more of her career and her role in the concert. It can be watched below.
