The premiere of a piece of music by Portsmouth-based Barbadian composer Nathan R Whitney (pictured above) will be performed by the city’s philharmonic orchestra at its next concert in Fareham in June.
Entitled ‘Voyager’, the piece will open a concert at the Crofton Community Centre in Stubbington on Saturday June 27 (7pm) which has the theme ‘A Journey Beyond Imagination’ and the event will also feature local soprano Jennifer Parker-Lummis.
Nathan said of his piece: “Over the past few years I have been refining my skills in composition and I am keen to share the results of my work.
“Every piece I compose tells its own story, whether it be standalone or connected to another of my works. I constantly try to improve with each new composition as I try to find my unique voice.”
Presently in his third year at the University of Portsmouth, where he is studying Computer Science, Nathan joined the orchestra in September.
Although his main instrument is piano, he is predominantly the orchestra’s timpanist. Nathan was born and raised in Barbados and his mother is from London.
Di Lloyd, Chair of the Orchestra, said: “We’re delighted to be able to showcase Nathan’s work. It’s a really strong piece that the orchestra is enjoying rehearsing and we think the audience will really appreciate it.”
Tickets, priced £15 – children £5 - for the concert, promoted by Montserrat Events, are available here .
The orchestra was founded in 2009 and has raised more than £25,000 for local good causes since then. It is supported by Bishops Printers.
