
Music by British composers is the theme of the latest charity concert of by the Portsmouth Philharmonic orchestra which will be in aid of the Lord Mayor’s annual appeal.
Advance tickets, priced £10 for adults (accompanied children free) for the concert on Sunday November 30 (3pm) at the Church of the Resurrection, Drayton are on sale here.
Entitled ‘Home Grown’, the concert sees George Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks taking centre stage, but a varied programme will also include works by Richard Rodney Bennett (Farnham Festival Overture), Ernest Tomlinson (Suite of English Folk Dances) and Benjamin Britten’s Matinees and Soirees Musicales using music by Rossini.
The orchestra, conducted by Ka Wai Cheng, pictured above, will also be performing a piece by a female composer for the first time, featuring Doreen Carwithen’s Suffolk Suite.
Orchestra Chair Di Lloyd said: “We are always pleased to be able to support the Lord Mayor’s Charity and we feel this programme provides the perfect mix of established classical pieces with one or two lesser-known composers.
“There is certainly something for everyone in the concert and we hope it will prove to be popular.”
The orchestra is supported by Bishops Printers and since it was founded in 2009 it as raised well over £25,000 for good causes in the Portsmouth area.
